1039 steps (6,800,000 gallons)

A map is a reflection of some subject with a relative degree of clarity. 1039 represents the number of steps that were first counted and recorded on _____from the outside of my studio door to the door of my apartment. Around the same time I installed plywood, painted white, on every bare surface of my studio door. Both exercises were an investigation of my new environment and an attempt to better understand the space that I now inhabited. Some time later and in a different mind set I began to let my clean, recyclable, trash begin to accumulate with the objective of generating material for art making. It wasn’t until I was driving across the country during the height of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, with the residue of my existence stuffed in every nook of the car that it became apparent that my mindful examination of my own residue required that I come to terms with my own consumption. In this way, the new map that I blazed across the country was a critique of the old map that looked naïve and dishonest in comparison. The mirrored globe hanging above the combined maps both corrects the orientation of the driven route and reiterates that experience of self-reflection.
